SUGAR HILL, NYC
Welcome to Harlem's Sugar Hill neighborhood in New York City!
Our famed neighborhood got its name in the 1920's when the neighborhood became a popular place for wealthy African Americans to live during the Harlem Renaissance. Reflective of the "sweet life" there, Sugar Hill featured row houses in which lived such prominent African Americans as W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Walter Francis White and Roy Wilkins.
Best known for its musical history in jazz, Sugar Hill is also home to 'The Sugarhill Gang,' the first rap group with a single in the Top 40, who took their name from the neighborhood.
Today, Sugar Hill is a vibrant community with numerous landmarks, cultural organizations, and great places to eat and experience Harlem. Check out Harlem One Stop for a calendar of events and neighborhood happenings.
We look forward to welcoming you in the near future!
